I
managed to get set-up with my 8" LX-90 and a ToUcam Pro for
the crash of the Smart-1 probe on the lunar surface. Being
unfamiliar with the topography around the Lake of
Excellence, I took a whack at framing the area that I
thought would be targeted. I could not lay a hand on my
6.3 reducer so I ended up getting it at f/10 instead. Oh,
well...at least the clouds gave me a break.

Great
job Peter!
We were clouded over here. Did any ejecta
reach sunlight?

I rolled
a few more AVIs following the blue flash and didn't see any
signs of ejecta.
I was running a pretty high gain at 5
FPS.

that's
excellent! I hope you communicate this image record to ALPO.
They have (thusfar) received nothing far as I have heard from
what Dembowski has posted on the ALPO yahoo lunar group --so
they would be very grateful for the observation i'm sure.
Their smart-1 impact observation site is here just in case you hadn't seen
it.
Great job!

Cool

see it.

GREAT
capture, Peter... congratulations!!! From my seat it looks
like you did pretty doggoned good at f/10. I'd have never guessed you
weren't familiar with the area. Nicely done!

Great
job Peter! According to Raffaello Lena of the GLR Group you
are one of only two amateurs to have captured this so far.
Your targeting skills of this area in Earthshine is very
impressive, well done!

Incredible sequence Peter. It looks like you got
some colour in there as well. Fantastic job with an 8" scope.

I am
eager to see what others come forward with...
I don't
know how blue the flash really was. There must have been some
in there since I was capturing with a color webcam. Expecting
a very dim event,I hiked up the gain and saturation. I expect
those settings may have imparted some false color.

Peter,
That is totally awesome!! I'll bet
the guy from Spaceweather as well as Chuck Wood would love to
see that!

On
Sunday AM, I tried to submit the gif using the Spaceweather
submission form, but it didn't go (file size too large?) so, I
sent an email with the link instead.
I'll get it to
Chuck Wood. Thanks for the suggestion.

a
comparison of the flash contour from an enlarged portion of
the frame in my capture with the contour as plotted by the
CFHT team.

I tried
to keep the north (upper right) oriented correctly, but I am
unsure about the orientation of the east-west
axis.
What do you think?

Peter,
Its an interesting aspect to investigate but I don't
know what this shows apart from a possible elongation in the
same direction as indicated in the CFHT image. The CFHT site
says it is in the direction of travel but if both these images
are oriented correctly it looks to me more like its off to the
south west not due south.
One difference to bear in
mind is that the CFHT was approx 10 sec H2 narrow-band
exposure whereas yours was less than 1/5 sec in natural light.
Their image has elongation to the upper left and lower right
which is stated to be from the spider. It looks to be a 4 vane
type from what I've seen on the website so it probably has
something to do with the elongations top right and bottom left
too. Your image doesn't have this problem so maybe it is more
valid for this type of investigation... one up to the amateur
community?
The 2 separate areas with different colours could be
of interest to someone who knows what they are looking for.
Maybe the blue is the impact and the violet is the volatiles,
but how far apart would that be - too far for that to make
sense? Perhaps someone who knows what they are looking at can
make some sense of it or maybe its an imaging artefact and
means nothing.
Don't know what it will tell anyone
except that there is a now a tiny new crater for the next
Lunar mission to look for!
